Writer's picture: Kristi RameyKristi Ramey

Welcome to our March Book Club! This month, we’re diving into the pros and cons baby-led feeding, as well as different ways of introducing new foods our little ones. There are a LOT of opinions and information on this topic out in the world, and our goal is to demystify it for you! Please note that we have an updated time, but the location is still the same:

Monday, March 3rd from 12-1:30pm at the Richmond Birth and Baby offices: 1900 Skipwith Road, Richmond, VA

What is Baby-Led Feeding?

Baby-led feeding encourages babies to develop feeding skills as they show signs of readiness-both physically and in their expressed interest of food! Instead of being spoon-fed purees or baby cereals, parents can offer whole, soft foods that little ones can explore and consume at their own pace and in their own ways (hint: it can be a bit messy).

This method can support independence and also allows for babies to connect with the experience of eating.

While it may seem daunting for new moms, baby-led feeding is much more than just giving your baby a piece of avocado, though it can certainly start as simply as that! It’s about allowing them to take control, play with food, and discover new flavors at their own pace. Studies suggest that around 60% of parents who adopt this method report a positive impact on their child’s eating habits over time.

Why Baby Led Feeding is Worth Looking Into

1. Encourages Independence

One of the standout benefits of baby-led feeding is the independence it fosters in your little one. By letting babies choose what they want to eat and how much, they develop a sense of their own needs. This can boost confidence and lead to more adventurous eating. A survey found that children who self-fed were 45% more likely to try new foods compared to those who were spoon-fed!

When babies explore food, they learn about textures, shapes, and tastes. This early exposure helps lay a positive foundation for healthy eating habits as they grow.

2. Teaches Self-Regulation

Baby-led feeding helps children learn self-regulation. They begin to listen to their bodies, understanding hunger and fullness cues, learning to stop when satisfied.

3. Strengthens Family Connection

Baby-led feeding turns mealtimes into family bonding experiences. When the family eats together, it creates a sense of connection. It’s not only about feeding your baby; it’s about making meaningful memories.

Enjoying food as a family may even improve overall family health, with studies showing that family meals are linked to healthier eating patterns in children!

We will discuss some of our favorite first foods, as well as a few tricks and tips for making it all work "in real life".

Let’s embrace the challenges and joys of raising our little ones together! Whether this is your first time at our book club or you're a seasoned member, please consider joining us, and feel free to bring a friend! RSVP using THIS LINK
